Day 1: Painting Atmosphere, Luminous Mysteries.
Atmospheric perspective has been part of persuasive Chinese landscapes for a thousand years and later developed in Europe in the 16th century by artists like Claude. J.M.W. Turner and George Inness later explored atmospheric perspective in new Romantic directions. We will examine and I will demonstrate their techniques to help you build more engaging pictures. Explore misty atmospheres as they settle on a salt marsh, waft through a forest, or wade through a valley. Learn how to infuse atmosphere, tinted luminosity and incandescence in your paintings. Learn how to build the haunting effects of imagery dissolving into space. . Following the demonstrations your instructor will work with each of you to help develop your paintings. Instruction will be in mixed media, watercolor, oil and acrylic.
Day 2: Realistic Abstractions
Merge realism with abstraction. Learn how to create deep illusory space, with shadows, unified light and unfolding events in abstraction. If you’re already an abstract painter you learn how to make abstractions with convincing illusions Learn how to evoke motion, perspectives of disappearance with subjects like the city, landscape or sky. Whether you paint on paper, canvas, aluminum, PVC or photographs here are strategies to create works that will oscillate between realism and abstraction. Relying on psychology and neuroscience we exploit the processes of vision to create pictures that arrest our attention. You will learn how to use color theory, simultaneous and successive contrast, color harmony, variable rhythms, sensations of movement, and art historical traditions to connect realistic experience with abstraction. Your instructor will demonstrate these ideas and then personally counsel each artist as they create their own works. Bring older paintings you are dissatisfied with or, make new work in this workshop. Instruction will be in mixed-media, watercolor, oil and acrylic
Day 3: Brighter and Brilliant
Find dramatic and bright color in landscapes, cityscapes, and abstractions. Learn how color perception changes under various lights, from twilight to midday. Learn how to recreate those effects. Learn how color memory and culture affect color perception. Learn why different colors create different emotional and spacial effects. Learn how color determines our sense of volume, space, movement, and luminance. Learn how artists achieve, iridescence, luminescence, successive contrast, simultaneous contrast, brilliance, halation, translucence, and reflection. Learn how artists from Ancient Greece, the Renaissance, and Romantic age, the Hudson River Painters, Impressionists, and Modernists use color. What were their ideas, materials and techniques? How did science to help them? What new materials are available to us? Using a variety of new tools your instructor will demonstrate how to create brilliant color effects and then help you develop bright harmonies in your work. Instruction will be in oil, watercolor, acrylic and mixed media.
